Snow Removal

The Grass Lake Department of Public Works strives to provide unmatched snow and ice control services and is aware of the seriousness of keeping roads drivable for all Village residents during the winter season. Because of the seriousness of this task, the Village utilizes a snow removal policy designed to prioritize roadway clearing efforts and make efficient use of our limited staff and financial resources, all with the intent of maintaining safe and passable roadways.

Our first priority is major roadways and school routes. These streets are an interlocking road system, connecting police and fire stations, rescue squad units, and county roads located within our City limits. The next priority is the remaining roads and streets, which include residential streets that carry a lower volume of traffic.

As a resident and homeowner, you can aid our community during the winter months by keeping sidewalks clear of accumulated snow and ice, as required per Village Ordinance 92.41. When clearing your sidewalks and driveways, keep in mind not to shovel snow into public roadways; this could potentially cause vehicular accidents and or obstruct safe and free movement of automobiles.

Additionally, please do not park in the street during snowfalls.  Cars parked in roadways hinder the ability of the DPW to plow roads. Please realize when the DPW plows, some snow will be deposited at the end of your driveway, or up against your mailbox and it is your responsibility to clear your own driveways and mailboxes. As a reminder, per Village Ordinance 92.41 there is no parking on the streets between the times of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

In Grass Lake, it is a rare occurrence for a snowplow to actually hit a mailbox, but the excess of heavy snow can knock down an unstable or shaky mailbox and/or posts. By taking certain inspection and maintenance and repair steps your mailbox winter time mishaps can be minimized.  In many cases, damage to posts and receptacles could have been avoided by routinely checking the post and mailbox for stability, tightening screws, repainting and replacing hinges to name a few.
